1. Love waves: These waves are horizontally polarized, meaning they cause the ground to move side-to-side, perpendicular to the direction the wave is traveling. They are the fastest of the surface waves and are responsible for much of the destructive shaking during earthquakes.
2. Rayleigh waves: These waves are vertically polarized, causing the ground to move in an elliptical path, similar to the motion of an ocean wave. They are slower than Love waves but can cause significant damage due to their large amplitude and long duration.
