  • Understanding Soil Horizons: The Unique Characteristics of the O Horizon
The soil layer least similar to the underlying rock is the O horizon, also known as the organic layer.

    Here's why:

    * O horizon: This is the uppermost layer of soil, composed primarily of decaying plant and animal matter (humus). It's rich in organic material and has a dark color.

    * Underlying rock: The rock beneath the soil layers is the parent material from which the soil was formed. This rock is generally inorganic and has a different composition and structure than the organic-rich O horizon.

The other soil layers (A, B, and C) are more directly influenced by the underlying rock and contain a mix of minerals and organic matter.
