  • Sandstone vs. Minerals: Understanding the Difference
Sandstone is not a mineral because it is composed of multiple minerals. Here's why:

    * Minerals are naturally occurring, solid, inorganic substances with a specific chemical composition and a defined crystal structure.

    * Sandstone is formed from the accumulation and cementation of sand grains, which are primarily composed of quartz (SiO2). However, sandstone can also contain other minerals like feldspar, mica, and fragments of other rocks.

Therefore, sandstone is a sedimentary rock, not a mineral. It is a collection of various mineral grains held together by a cementing agent.
