  • Active Continental Rifts: Modern Examples & Geological Activity
Here are a few modern-day examples of active continental rifts:

    * East African Rift Valley: This is one of the most prominent and well-known examples. It stretches for thousands of kilometers across East Africa, and is responsible for the formation of the iconic Rift Valley lakes and volcanic mountains like Mount Kilimanjaro.

    * Baikal Rift Zone, Siberia: Located in Russia, this rift is home to Lake Baikal, the deepest lake in the world. It's characterized by active volcanism and frequent earthquakes.

    * Rio Grande Rift, North America: This rift runs from Colorado through New Mexico and into Texas. While less active than the East African Rift, it is still associated with volcanic activity and geothermal energy resources.

    * West Antarctic Rift System: This rift is responsible for the formation of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, and is characterized by significant tectonic activity and volcanic eruptions.

    * Iceland: While not a classic rift valley, Iceland is a hotspot where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rises above sea level. This volcanic island is a prime example of ongoing rifting and associated volcanic and geothermal activity.

It's important to note that the process of continental rifting can be slow and subtle. In many locations, the evidence of rifting might be less dramatic than in the East African Rift Valley, but still significant.
