  • Igneous Rocks: Formation & Types - What Lies Beneath?
    The type of rock that can only form below Earth's surface is igneous rock, specifically plutonic igneous rock.

    Here's why:

    * Igneous rocks are formed from the cooling and solidification of magma (molten rock) or lava (molten rock that has erupted onto the Earth's surface).

    * Plutonic rocks are formed when magma cools and crystallizes slowly beneath the Earth's surface. This slow cooling allows for the formation of large mineral crystals, giving plutonic rocks a coarse-grained texture.

    Examples of plutonic rocks include:

    * Granite

    * Gabbro

    * Diorite

    Volcanic rocks, on the other hand, are formed from the cooling and solidification of lava on the Earth's surface. They have a finer-grained texture because the lava cools more quickly.
