  • Himalayan Mountain Formation: A 50 Million Year History
The Himalayan mountains formed over a very long period, but the major uplift and formation of the range as we know it today occurred around 50 million years ago. This is when the Indian subcontinent collided with the Eurasian Plate, causing the landmass to buckle and rise.

However, the process of mountain building is ongoing, and the Himalayas are still rising at a rate of about 5 mm per year.
