  • Understanding Earth's Landmass: Continents, Islands & More
The Earth's surface above sea level is called land. It consists of a variety of features including:

    * Continents: Large landmasses like Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.

    * Islands: Smaller landmasses surrounded by water.

    * Mountains: Elevated landforms that rise above the surrounding area.

    * Hills: Smaller and less elevated landforms than mountains.

    * Plateaus: Flat, elevated areas of land.

    * Valleys: Low-lying areas between hills or mountains.

    * Plains: Large, flat areas of land.

    * Deserts: Dry and barren areas of land.

    * Forests: Areas covered in trees.

    * Grasslands: Areas covered in grass.

The land surface above sea level makes up about 29% of the Earth's total surface area. The remaining 71% is covered by water, primarily the oceans.
