  • Understanding Earth's Tectonic Plates: The Major and Minor Players
    It's not quite accurate to say there are exactly 16 tectonic plates. The Earth's lithosphere is divided into a more complex mosaic of both major and minor plates.

    Here are the major plates, often considered the "Big 7":

    1. African Plate

    2. Antarctic Plate

    3. Eurasian Plate

    4. Indo-Australian Plate

    5. North American Plate

    6. Pacific Plate

    7. South American Plate

    In addition to these major plates, there are numerous smaller plates, some examples include:

    * Caribbean Plate

    * Cocos Plate

    * Nazca Plate

    * Arabian Plate

    * Philippine Sea Plate

    * Juan de Fuca Plate

    * Scotia Plate

    The number of plates is not fixed and depends on the criteria used for their definition. Some classifications recognize even more plates, particularly when considering smaller, micro-plates.
