  • Volcanoes: Understanding Magma Flow and Volcanic Vents
    The opening in the Earth's crust through which magma flows is called a volcano.

    More specifically, the actual opening at the surface is called a vent. The vent can be at the top of a volcano's cone or on its flanks.

    Magma travels up through a conduit, which is a channel within the Earth's crust. The conduit connects the magma chamber, where the magma is stored, to the surface vent.
