  • Understanding Sediment Formation: Weathering, Erosion & Deposition
The three main processes that make sediments are:

    1. Weathering: This is the breakdown of rocks, soil, and minerals through physical and chemical processes. Examples include:

    * Physical weathering: Frost wedging, abrasion, and thermal expansion/contraction.

    * Chemical weathering: Oxidation, dissolution, and hydrolysis.

    2. Erosion: This is the transportation of weathered material by agents like wind, water, ice, or gravity. Erosion moves sediments from their source location to a new location.

    3. Deposition: This is the settling of eroded material in a new location, often in a low-energy environment like a lake, ocean, or river delta. Over time, these deposited sediments can become compacted and cemented together to form sedimentary rocks.
