  • Ductile Rocks: Understanding Deformation and Examples
A rock that deforms like a piece of molded clay is called a ductile rock.

    Here's why:

    * Ductility refers to a material's ability to deform under stress without breaking.

    * Clay is a very ductile material, meaning it can be molded and shaped without fracturing.

    * Rocks can also be ductile, especially under high pressure and temperature conditions found deep within the Earth's crust.

    Examples of Ductile Rocks:

    * Salt - Often forms salt domes due to its ductility

    * Marble - Can be sculpted and carved

    * Schist - A metamorphic rock that can bend and fold

    * Some types of granite - Can exhibit ductile behavior under certain conditions

Important Note: While some rocks are ductile, others are brittle. Brittle rocks tend to break or fracture when stressed, rather than deform.
