  • Why Do Some Rocks Float? Density & Exceptions Explained
Not many rocks float naturally! Here's why:

    * Density: Rocks are generally denser than water. This means they have more mass packed into the same volume compared to water. Since denser things sink, most rocks go to the bottom.

    * Exceptions: There are a few exceptions:

    * Pumice: This volcanic rock is full of air pockets, making it very light and porous. It can easily float.

    * Some Sedimentary Rocks: Some types of limestone or sandstone may have enough air pockets to float, especially if they are porous and haven't been compacted heavily.

    * Rocks with Air Trapped Inside: If a rock has a large air pocket trapped within, it might float temporarily. But this is usually unstable, and the air pocket will eventually escape.

So, while most rocks sink, a few special types can float due to their unique properties.
