  • Asteroids, Meteoroids & Space Dust: Understanding Irregular Shapes
Irregularly shaped pieces of rock, metal, and dust are most likely asteroids.

    Here's why:

    * Asteroids are rocky, metallic, or icy bodies that orbit the Sun, mostly found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. They come in all shapes and sizes, and many are irregularly shaped.

    * Meteoroids are smaller pieces of rock and metal that also orbit the Sun, but they are even smaller than asteroids.

    * Dust is very fine particles, often created by the disintegration of asteroids or comets.

While all of these can be irregularly shaped, the term "asteroid" best describes the larger bodies made of rock, metal, and dust.
