  • What is Loess? Understanding Glacial Wind-Deposited Soil
The powdery wind-blown soil formed from pulverization by glaciers is called loess.

Loess is a fine-grained, wind-deposited sediment that is typically yellowish-brown in color. It is composed primarily of silt-sized particles, but can also contain clay and sand. Loess is found in many parts of the world, particularly in regions that were once covered by glaciers, such as the Midwestern United States, China, and Europe.
