  • Weathering: Understanding the Breakdown of Rocks - Types & Processes
The breakdown of rocks is called weathering.

There are two main types of weathering:

    * Physical weathering: This involves the breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces without changing their chemical composition. Examples include frost wedging, abrasion, and thermal stress.

    * Chemical weathering: This involves the chemical alteration of rocks, often changing their composition. Examples include oxidation, hydrolysis, and dissolution.
