  • Understanding Sedimentary Rocks: A Guide to the 3 Main Types
The three main groups of sedimentary rocks are:

    1. Clastic sedimentary rocks: These are formed from fragments of other rocks (clasts) that have been weathered, transported, and deposited. Examples include sandstone, shale, and conglomerate.

    2. Chemical sedimentary rocks: These are formed from the precipitation of minerals from solution, often in bodies of water. Examples include limestone, rock salt, and gypsum.

    3. Organic sedimentary rocks: These are formed from the accumulation and compaction of organic matter, such as plant debris or the remains of marine organisms. Examples include coal, oil shale, and some types of limestone.
