  • Pumice: The Lightest Extrusive Rock - Density & Properties
    The extrusive rock with the lowest density is pumice.

    Here's why:

    * Pumice is a volcanic rock formed from frothy lava that cools rapidly.

    * It's full of air pockets (vesicles) which give it a very porous texture.

    * This high porosity makes pumice incredibly light, often floating on water.

    While other extrusive rocks like scoria are also lightweight due to their vesicular texture, pumice typically has the lowest density among them.
