  • Biogenic Sedimentary Rocks: Formation, Examples & Characteristics
Sedimentary rocks formed partially by animals and plants are called biogenic sedimentary rocks.

    Here's why:

    * Biogenic means "originating from living organisms."

    * Sedimentary rocks are formed from the accumulation and cementation of sediments.

Some examples of biogenic sedimentary rocks include:

    * Coquina: Made up of shell fragments cemented together.

    * Chalk: Formed from the accumulation of microscopic marine organisms called coccolithophores.

    * Coal: Formed from the accumulation of plant matter, primarily trees.

While these rocks are primarily formed from biological material, they can also contain other types of sediment.
