  • Understanding Sedimentary Rocks: Types, Formation & Examples
Here are four kinds of sedimentary rocks, categorized by their formation:

    1. Clastic sedimentary rocks: These are formed from fragments of other rocks that have been weathered and eroded. Examples include:

    * Sandstone: Formed from sand-sized grains.

    * Conglomerate: Formed from gravel-sized fragments.

    * Shale: Formed from clay-sized particles.

    2. Chemical sedimentary rocks: These are formed from the precipitation of minerals from water solutions. Examples include:

    * Rock salt (halite): Formed from the evaporation of seawater.

    * Limestone: Formed from the accumulation of marine organisms' shells or the precipitation of calcium carbonate.

    3. Organic sedimentary rocks: These are formed from the accumulation of organic matter. Examples include:

    * Coal: Formed from the accumulation of plant material.

    * Oil shale: Formed from the accumulation of algae and other organic matter.

    4. Bioclastic sedimentary rocks: These are formed from the accumulation of fragments of marine organisms, such as shells, corals, and skeletons. They are a special category within the clastic group.

This is just a small sample of the many types of sedimentary rocks. They are fascinating to study because they tell us about the Earth's history, past climates, and environments.
