  • Continental vs. Oceanic Crust: Key Differences Explained
Here are two key differences between continental and oceanic crust:

    1. Composition:

    * Continental crust: Predominantly composed of granite, which is rich in silica and aluminum. It's lighter and less dense than oceanic crust.

    * Oceanic crust: Predominantly composed of basalt, which is richer in iron and magnesium. It's denser and heavier than continental crust.

    2. Thickness:

    * Continental crust: Much thicker, ranging from 30 to 70 kilometers (19 to 43 miles) thick.

    * Oceanic crust: Thinner, typically only 5 to 10 kilometers (3 to 6 miles) thick.
