  • Relative Dating: Understanding Geologic Time Sequencing
The dating process that places geologic events in proper sequence is called relative dating.

    Here's why:

    * Relative dating focuses on determining the order of events, without assigning specific numerical ages.

    * It uses principles like the Law of Superposition (older layers are at the bottom) and cross-cutting relationships (a fault or intrusion is younger than the rock it cuts through) to establish a sequence.

In contrast, absolute dating assigns numerical ages to geologic events using methods like radiometric dating.
