  • Soil Components: Understanding the Origin of Humus
The component of soil that is not formed by the weathering of rocks is humus.

    Here's why:

    * Humus is the decomposed organic matter from dead plants and animals. It's rich in nutrients and helps improve soil structure, water retention, and aeration.

    * Weathering is the physical and chemical breakdown of rocks, which contributes to the mineral component of soil (sand, silt, and clay).

So, while weathering plays a crucial role in soil formation, humus is a separate component that arises from biological processes.
