    Two types of terrain on the Moon are:

    1. Maria (singular: mare): These are large, dark plains of solidified volcanic basalt. They were formed by ancient volcanic eruptions billions of years ago, giving the Moon its distinctive "face".

    2. Highlands: These are the lighter, mountainous areas of the Moon. They are made up of an older, lighter-colored rock called anorthosite. Highlands are generally older than Maria, and have been heavily cratered by impacts.
