  • Understanding Stony-Iron Meteorites: Pallasites & Mesosiderites
The two main types of stony-iron meteorites are:

    1. Pallasites: These meteorites are characterized by a mixture of olivine crystals (a silicate mineral) embedded in a nickel-iron matrix. The olivine crystals are typically green and translucent, giving pallasites a striking appearance.

    2. Mesosiderites: These meteorites are composed of roughly equal parts silicate minerals (like pyroxene and plagioclase) and nickel-iron metal. Unlike pallasites, the silicate and metal components in mesosiderites are more finely mixed, creating a brecciated texture with angular fragments of both materials.
