  • Asteroids, Meteoroids, and Micrometeoroids: Understanding Space Rocks
A very small rocky object in space is called an asteroid.

While the term "asteroid" can be used for any rocky object orbiting the Sun, they come in different sizes.

Here are some terms you might see used for different sizes:

    * Asteroid: Generally refers to a rocky body larger than 1 meter in diameter.

    * Meteoroid: A small rocky body, typically less than 1 meter in diameter.

    * Micrometeoroid: Even smaller, often microscopic, particles of dust or rock.

When a meteoroid enters the Earth's atmosphere and burns up, it creates a meteor (shooting star). If a meteoroid survives the journey through the atmosphere and lands on Earth, it's called a meteorite.
