  • Mount Everest Discovery: History & Peak XV's Rise to Fame
While the exact date of Mount Everest's discovery is a bit fuzzy, here's what we know:

    * 1847: The Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, led by Andrew Waugh, identified a peak in the Himalayas as the highest in the world. They named it Peak XV and calculated its height to be 29,002 feet (8,840 meters).

    * 1852: The official announcement of Peak XV's discovery and its height was made, and it was officially named Mount Everest in honor of Sir George Everest, the former Surveyor General of India.

So, it's generally accepted that Mount Everest was discovered in 1847.

However, it's important to note that:

    * Local people likely knew of the mountain long before 1847. The Sherpa people had lived in the region for centuries and were likely familiar with the peak.

    * Exploration and mapping of the Himalayas were ongoing, and other surveyors may have glimpsed the peak before 1847, but without accurate measurements, it was not definitively identified as the highest.

Therefore, while 1847 marks the official discovery and naming of Mount Everest, its existence and importance to local populations were likely known much earlier.
