    The two main types of terrain on the Moon are:

    1. Maria (singular: Mare): These are large, dark, flat plains of solidified volcanic basalt. They were formed by ancient volcanic eruptions and are relatively smooth compared to the highlands.

    2. Highlands: These are the older, heavily cratered areas of the Moon. They are composed mostly of anorthosite, a light-colored rock, and are much more rugged and mountainous than the Maria.
