The part of the Earth where the sun's rays strike most directly is called the tropics.
More specifically, the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere and the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere mark the furthest points north and south where the sun can be directly overhead at noon.
