    A long, narrow bay usually surrounded by high Scandinavian mountains is called a fjord.

    Fjords are formed by glacial erosion, where glaciers carve deep valleys into the land. As the glaciers retreat, the valleys fill with seawater, creating the characteristic deep, narrow inlets with steep sides.
