  • Santa Maria Volcano: Cinder Cone or Stratovolcano? Understanding its Composition
Santa Maria is not a cinder cone volcano. It is a stratovolcano, also known as a composite volcano.

    Here's why:

    * Cinder cones are small, steep-sided volcanoes that are formed by the accumulation of volcanic cinders and other ejecta. They typically have a single vent and erupt explosively.

    * Stratovolcanoes are much larger, cone-shaped volcanoes that are built up from multiple layers of lava flows, ash, and tephra. They are known for their explosive eruptions and are often associated with subduction zones.

Santa Maria is a large stratovolcano located in Guatemala, known for its dramatic 1902 eruption.
