  • Mount St. Helens Eruption: Lava Flow Distance & Impact
The lava flow from the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens was relatively short compared to other eruptions. It only traveled approximately 6 miles (9.6 km) down the North Fork Toutle River.

This is significantly shorter than the flows from other eruptions like the 1914 eruption, which flowed for 18 miles (29 km), or the 1857 eruption, which traveled 15 miles (24 km).

The limited distance of the 1980 lava flow was due to the nature of the eruption, which was primarily explosive and not focused on a single lava flow.
