  • Understanding Metamorphic Rock Formation: Heat & Pressure
The two main things that are applied to igneous or sedimentary rocks to make them metamorphic are:

    1. Heat: Heat, usually from the Earth's interior or from magma intrusions, provides the energy for the chemical reactions that change the mineral composition and texture of the rocks.

    2. Pressure: Pressure, often from the weight of overlying rock layers, causes the atoms in the minerals to rearrange, leading to new mineral structures.

These two factors, heat and pressure, work together to transform the original rock into a metamorphic rock.
