  • Understanding Plate Boundaries: The Source of Earthquakes & Volcanoes
The belts where most earthquakes and volcanoes occur are called plate boundaries.

There are three main types of plate boundaries:

    * Divergent boundaries: Where plates move apart. This creates rifts, volcanoes, and earthquakes.

    * Convergent boundaries: Where plates collide. This can create mountains, volcanoes, and earthquakes.

    * Transform boundaries: Where plates slide past each other horizontally. This causes earthquakes.

The vast majority of earthquakes and volcanoes occur along these plate boundaries, which form distinct belts around the globe.
