  • Volcanoes & Magma: Understanding Volcanic Formation
There's no specific term for a volcano formed *only* by liquid rock. Here's why:

    * Volcanoes are formed by magma, not just "liquid rock." Magma is molten rock *beneath* the Earth's surface. When it erupts and flows on the surface, it becomes lava.

    * Volcanoes have various components. They're built up not just by lava flows, but also by:

    * Pyroclastic material: This includes ash, cinders, and rocks that are explosively ejected from the volcano.

    * Gas: Volcanic eruptions release various gases, which can also contribute to the volcano's structure.

So, while "liquid rock" is a simplified way to think about it, a volcano is formed by the combined forces of magma, lava, pyroclastic material, and gases.
