  • California's Tectonic Plates: North American & Pacific - Geology Explained
    California sits on two tectonic plates:

    * The North American Plate: The majority of California, including the Sierra Nevada mountains, sits on this plate.

    * The Pacific Plate: The western edge of California, including the coast and the San Andreas Fault, sits on this plate.

    The San Andreas Fault is a transform fault that marks the boundary between these two plates. They are constantly moving in opposite directions, which is why California experiences so many earthquakes.
