  • Coal and Natural Gas: Common Fossil Fuel Associations & Formation
The two fossil fuels most often found together in underground rock are coal and natural gas.

    Here's why:

    * Formation: Both coal and natural gas form from the decomposition of organic matter over millions of years under intense pressure and heat.

    * Geological Conditions: The geological conditions that favor the formation of coal also often favor the formation of natural gas. These conditions include the presence of large amounts of organic matter, sedimentary layers, and tectonic activity.

    * Location: Many coal deposits contain layers of natural gas trapped within the rock. This is because as the organic matter decomposes, it produces various hydrocarbons, including methane (natural gas).

While oil is also a fossil fuel, it's less commonly found directly alongside coal and natural gas. Oil tends to form in different geological environments, often at deeper depths, and is typically associated with sedimentary rocks like shale and sandstone.
