  • Mountain Formation: How Continental Plate Convergence Creates Ranges
When two continental plates converge, they collide. This collision results in the formation of a mountain range.

    Here's why:

    * Continental plates are thick and buoyant. They don't subduct (slide under) each other like oceanic plates do.

    * The collision compresses and folds the rock layers. This creates the towering peaks and valleys characteristic of mountain ranges.

A famous example of this is the Himalayan Mountains, formed by the ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates.
