  • From Rock to Lava: Understanding Volcanic Formation
    Rocks don't turn into lava. It's the other way around!

    Here's how it works:

    * Lava is molten rock found on the Earth's surface. It's formed when rock deep within the Earth's mantle melts due to intense heat and pressure.

    * This molten rock rises to the surface through volcanic vents and fissures. When it erupts, it's called lava.

    * As lava cools and solidifies, it forms igneous rocks. These rocks are classified as either intrusive (cooled underground) or extrusive (cooled on the surface).

    So, the process is:

    1. Rock in the Earth's mantle melts due to heat and pressure.

    2. Molten rock rises to the surface as lava.

    3. Lava cools and solidifies into igneous rocks.

    Think of it like baking a cake: the batter (molten rock) is cooked (melted) in the oven (Earth's mantle), and then the cake (lava) comes out of the oven and hardens (cools and solidifies) into igneous rock.
