  • Magma vs. Lava: Understanding the Difference
    Lava and magma are essentially the same thing - molten rock. The difference lies in their location:

    * Magma is molten rock found beneath the Earth's surface.

    * Lava is molten rock that has erupted onto the Earth's surface.

    So, when magma reaches the surface, it's called lava.
