  • Understanding the Nasal Turbinates: Anatomy & Functions
The turbinates, also known as nasal conchae, are bony structures in the nasal cavity that are covered with mucous membranes. They are not divided into three sections, but rather into three distinct turbinates on each side of the nasal cavity:

    1. Superior turbinate: This is the smallest and highest turbinate, located near the roof of the nasal cavity.

    2. Middle turbinate: This is the largest and most prominent turbinate, located in the middle of the nasal cavity.

    3. Inferior turbinate: This is the lowest turbinate, located near the floor of the nasal cavity.

It's important to note that there is also a sphenoidal turbinate which is not as well-defined, but plays a role in airflow regulation.
