    The highest magnitude earthquake ever recorded was a 9.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Valdivia, Chile on May 22, 1960.

    This earthquake is known as the Great Chilean Earthquake and caused extensive damage and a tsunami that impacted the Pacific coast of South America, as well as Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines.
