  • Understanding Soil Composition: The 3 Main Sediment Types
The three main types of sediment that make up soil are:

    1. Sand: Sand particles are the largest, ranging from 0.05 to 2.0 millimeters in diameter. They feel gritty and don't hold water well.

    2. Silt: Silt particles are smaller than sand, ranging from 0.002 to 0.05 millimeters in diameter. They feel smooth and powdery and hold water better than sand.

    3. Clay: Clay particles are the smallest, less than 0.002 millimeters in diameter. They feel sticky when wet and hold water very well.

The proportions of sand, silt, and clay in a soil determine its texture, which influences its water-holding capacity, drainage, and suitability for different plant growth.
