1. Troposphere: This is the lowest layer, where we live and where weather occurs. It extends from the Earth's surface up to about 7-15 kilometers (4-9 miles).
2. Stratosphere: This layer contains the ozone layer, which protects us from harmful ultraviolet radiation. It extends from the top of the troposphere to about 50 kilometers (31 miles).
3. Mesosphere: This layer is where most meteors burn up. It extends from the top of the stratosphere to about 85 kilometers (53 miles).
4. Thermosphere: This layer is very hot due to the absorption of solar radiation. It extends from the top of the mesosphere to about 600 kilometers (373 miles).
5. Exosphere: This is the outermost layer of the atmosphere, gradually merging into space. It extends from the top of the thermosphere to about 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles).
While we can divide the atmosphere into these five layers, it's important to note that they are not distinctly separated but rather blend into each other.
