  • Pangaea Discovery: Who Proposed the Supercontinent Theory?
It wasn't one single person who "discovered" Pangaea, but rather a gradual process of scientific discovery. However, Alfred Wegener is credited with being the first to propose the existence of Pangaea in 1912, based on his observations of:

    * Matching coastlines: The shapes of the continents on either side of the Atlantic Ocean, particularly South America and Africa, appeared to fit together like puzzle pieces.

    * Fossil evidence: Identical fossils of plants and animals were found on continents now separated by vast oceans, suggesting they were once connected.

    * Geological formations: Similar rock formations and mountain ranges were found on different continents, indicating a shared geological history.

While Wegener's initial theory was met with skepticism, his work laid the foundation for the development of plate tectonics, the theory that explains the movement of Earth's crust and the formation of continents and oceans.

So, while Wegener is often associated with the discovery of Pangaea, it's important to remember that his theory was built upon the work of many scientists before him, and continues to be refined by researchers today.
