  • Understanding Compasses: How Earth's Magnetic Field Works
It's not gravity that makes a compass point north! It's Earth's magnetic field. Here's why:

    * Earth's Core: The Earth has a solid inner core and a liquid outer core. The movement of molten iron in the outer core generates electric currents.

    * Magnetic Field: These electric currents create a magnetic field that extends far out into space.

    * Compass Needle: A compass needle is a small magnet. It aligns itself with the Earth's magnetic field lines.

    * Magnetic North: The Earth's magnetic field lines converge at a point near the geographic North Pole, which is called the magnetic North Pole.

So, while gravity keeps us grounded, it doesn't affect how a compass works. It's the invisible force of Earth's magnetism that guides the compass needle towards magnetic north.
