  • Alfred Wegener and the Continental Drift Theory: A Comprehensive Overview
The continental drift theory was proposed by Alfred Wegener in 1912.

While he wasn't the first to notice the fit of the continents, Wegener was the first to put forth a comprehensive theory that included evidence from various fields, like:

    * Geological fit: The coastlines of South America and Africa fit together like puzzle pieces.

    * Fossil evidence: Similar fossils were found on continents now separated by vast oceans, suggesting they were once connected.

    * Matching rock types and mountain ranges: Similar rock formations and mountain ranges were found on continents now far apart.

    * Paleoclimate data: Evidence of glaciers in tropical regions and tropical fossils in polar regions suggested continents had shifted.

However, Wegener's theory was met with skepticism and even ridicule at the time. It wasn't until the 1960s that it was finally accepted, thanks to advancements in technology and the discovery of seafloor spreading.
