  • Tsunamis: Understanding Giant Tidal Waves & Their Origins
Giant tidal waves are called tsunamis.

    Here's why that's a better term:

    * Tidal wave is a misleading term. While tsunamis are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon (like tides), they are not just giant waves.

    * Tsunami comes from the Japanese words "tsu" (harbor) and "nami" (wave). This term accurately reflects the devastating impact these waves have on coastal areas.

Tsunamis are incredibly powerful and destructive waves caused by underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides.
