  • What is a Volcanic Vent? Understanding Volcano Formation
A volcano is a mountain that builds up around an opening in Earth's crust called a vent.

The vent is where magma (molten rock) and gases from deep within the Earth's mantle erupt onto the surface. As the lava cools and solidifies, it forms layers around the vent, creating the cone shape we associate with volcanoes.
