  • Arctic Circle: Definition, Significance & Midnight Sun/Polar Night
The parallel at 66 and a half degrees north is called the Arctic Circle.

    Here's why it's important:

    * The Arctic Circle marks the southernmost point where the sun remains continuously above the horizon for 24 hours during the summer solstice. This is known as the "midnight sun."

    * Conversely, it also marks the southernmost point where the sun remains continuously below the horizon for 24 hours during the winter solstice. This is known as the "polar night."

    * The Arctic Circle and the Antarctic Circle (at 66.5 degrees south) are the boundaries of the polar regions. These regions experience extreme variations in daylight hours throughout the year.
