  • Silicates vs. Non-Silicates: Understanding Mineral Groups
    The two big groups of minerals are silicates and non-silicates.

    * Silicates are the largest and most abundant group of minerals, making up about 90% of Earth's crust. They are characterized by their silicon-oxygen tetrahedron structure.

    * Non-silicates encompass all other minerals that don't contain silicon-oxygen tetrahedra. They are further subdivided into many different classes based on their chemical composition and structure.
